Radon Gas Testing Radon Gas TestingRadon is a colorless, odorless radioactive gas emitted from the ground that may seep into your home. It is created by the decay of uranium and is present in all rock and soil. According to the Surgeon General, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. Radon causes thousands of preventable deaths each year. The Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General recommend that all homes be tested for radon. Radon gas cannot be detected by the human senses so testing your home is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk of radon. According to the EPA, radon levels at or above 4.0 pCi/L (picocuries per liter) should be lowered. By these standards, approximately 15% of homes in Georgia have above normal radon levels. A high radon test does not mean that a home is uninhabitable or undesirable; it simply means that the high levels should be lowered. Professionally installed removal (often called “mitigation”) systems can lower radon to an acceptable level.
